The JV Tiger boys basketball team defeated North Polk 55-48 in the Kriegel gym.
The teams traded leads early with the Comets ahead 10-9, when they finished the 1st quarter with 3 consecutive 3ptrs. Alex Snook had 6, Owen Coffman, Cain Barnum and Trey Gohlmann 2 each to keep the Tigers within reach. North Polk led 20-13.
The 2nd quarter saw the Tigers lock down on the perimeter and held N. Polk to 4 points in the quarter. Snook added 7 more inside, Matayas Durr dropped in 4 points in the paint and Barnum knocked in a 3ptr to push the Tigers ahead 29-24 at the half.
The 3rd quarter saw the Tigers miss opportunities with turnovers and tough shot selection. Good rebounding allowed the Tigers to keep a 38-34 lead. The Tigers held a 44-40 lead midway thru the 4th, when Eli Ivanov scored 4 consecutive points and Durr added 2 strong finishes to open a 10 point lead. Durr and Ivanov combined for 21 of Grinnell’s 26 2nd half points.
“Eli Ivanov was a major difference on the floor tonight. It wasn’t a coincidence that we outscored N. Polk by 15 points the 2 quarters he played. Alex Snook continues to play consistent strong basketball inside. He’s become our best talker. Matayas Durr got better each quarter and he’s getting to spots he needs to be more often. We did a good job again of keeping the ball out of the lane”, said Coach Baker.
Next game is Thursday at Norwalk.
