Grinnell JV boys basketball teams’ comeback effort ran out of time at North Polk as the Comets held on for a 48-44 win.
The Tigers played solid defense for the first 5 minutes as the Tigers held a slim 5-4 lead. “We missed an opportunity to build a lead in the 1st quarter,” said Coach Baker. “We got several quality defensive stops but played too fast on the offensive end. That resulted in some contested shots and turnovers close to the basket. Then North Polk made 3 3ptrs in a row to close out the quarter.”
The Comets led 30-21 at the half behind 6 3point goals. They added 4 more in the second half for a total of 10.
“We need to improve on stopping the ball getting to the lane and then being able to close out on the perimeter. The last 3 games we’ve seen some excellent 3pt shooting by our opponents.”
Kyle Dillon had an outstanding performance for the Tigers scoring 20 points. His total included 4 3ptrs. Trey Gohlmann used solid positioning to drop in 14 points. Tyler Walker had 8 pts, including a pair of 3ptrs and Joseph McCombs added a pair of free throws.
The Tigers will play home Friday v. Pella to kickoff a triple header v. the Dutch and then 11:00 on Saturday in non-conference action v. Center Point – Urbana.
