The Grinnell JV boys fell at Pella Christian 63-48 Monday night.

“I was very pleased with our effort and consistent play for 2 and a half quarters,” said Coach Baker. “We had a lot of different players make a lot of good decisions and finish plays at both ends of the court. Unfortunately, we struggled at the FT line, and combined with some perimeter turnovers led to a Pella Ch. 15-3 run at the end of the 3rd period.”

“Calvin Jaworski, Braden Blackford and Andrew Cogley all got to the rim and the FT line in the 1st half – and they were the shortest players on the court. That’s the toughness we’re looking for. Brady Steward picked up from his strong 4th period Saturday and played hard at both ends. Cole Johnson plays strong, but was in foul trouble. Dylan McIlrath, Joseph McCombs, Jackson Horras and Sully Herbers all knocked down 3ptrs. Nick Brennecke added strong rebounding. This group is moving forward.”

Trailing 5-0 early, Grinnell battled back to an 11 all tie at the end of 1. The 2nd quarter saw the Tigers play tough around the rim against the much taller Eagles and make 3 3ptrs to take a 29-27 halftime lead. The Tigers continued in the 3rd quarter and pushed out to a 37-31 lead.

“We had 2 steals and a chance to open up a lead, but didn’t convert FT’s”

The Eagles focused on using their height and led after 3 qtrs, 46-40. It was still a 7 point game with 3:00 left, but the Eagles made FT’s down the stretch.

The Tigers will play at Indianola Friday.
