Trailing by a 38-31 score entering the final quarter, the Grinnell JV Boys basketball team used pressure defense, strong rebounding and some clutch shooting to earn an exciting 54-50 win over Pella.
“I asked our team to play as physical and as hard as we did against our Varsity this week in practice,” said Coach Baker. “This was definitely the most sustained effort from all 11 players that we’ve had in a game this year. We fought for rebounds, loose balls and played stronger with the ball in traffic as the game progressed.”
Parker Johnson and Joseph McCombs made 3ptrs against the Pella zone to start the final stanza. Trey Gohlmann converted an acrobatic conventional 3 pt play on a nice pass from Owen Coffman. After Pella made their own string of 3ptrs, Johnson nailed his second three ball and a Johnson steal led to a Tyler Walker 3ptr. Johnsons’ third long ball of the quarter gave the Tigers a 49-46 lead and a pair of Kyle Dillon free throws gave the Tigers their final cushion.
“We made a season high 10 3ptrs, which was nice to see because our players spend a lot of time shooting them. A big part of that was we moved the ball quicker and that allows us to get our balance into those shots.”
Scoring for Grinnell:
Tyler Walker 17 (2 3ptrs)
Parker Johnson 11 (3 3ptrs)
Kyle Dillon 10 (2 3ptrs)
Trey Gohlmann 5
Sully Herbers 3 ( 1 3ptr)
Joseph McCombs 3 (1 3ptr)
Nick Williams 3 (1 3ptr)
Owen Coffman 2
The Tigers will be at home with an early 11:00am tipoff v. Center Point – Urbana Saturday Jan 12 and at Oskaloosa next Thursday Jan 17.
