The Grinnell JV boys basketball team opened the 2020 portion of their season at Center Point-Urbana squeaking out a 56-55 win over the Pointers.
The Tigers trailed 9-2 early but Sully Herbers scored 7 quick points off of a couple steals and finishes. Nick Brennecke, Colin Gibson, Tyler Walker and Dylan McIlrath all put the ball in the hoop and the Tigers led 16-13 at the quarter.
With some foul trouble and Gibson injuring his foot, Grinnell had a stale 2nd period. The Pointers led 32-23 at the half.
“Our team did a lot of things correct in the first half. We had several individuals who were more aggressive going to the basket. Our issue was 1-8 FT shooting and a couple were the front end of bonus attempts.”
In the 3rd qtr, teams traded baskets until McIlrath scored 7 pts in the final minute. His corner 3 at the horn knotted the score at 40.
The final stanza saw Walker, and Herbers convert tough inside baskets and Brady Steward drained a key 3ptr to put the Tigers ahead 46-45 with 5:00 left. Grinnell trailed 55-52 under a minute left when Walker was fouled and made a pair of FT’s. After a rare press forced a quick CP-U shot, McIlrath did solid work to earn another pair of FT’s and put the Tigers ahead by 1. CP-U used their final 2 timeouts to set up a winning attempt, but the Tigers led by Herbers and Calvin Jaworski did a great job of disguising defenses and forcing a tough shot at the buzzer.
The Tiger JV will play at Pella Christian on Monday.
