It came down to the last play, but Grinnell Tigers Varsity was on the wrong end of a 7-6 defeat to Pella Christian on Wednesday. The game was tied at six with Pella Christian batting in the bottom of the seventh when Stone Turner singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Despite the loss, Grinnell Tigers Varsity did collect six hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Pella Christian had 11 hits on the way to victory.
Grinnell Tigers Varsity fired up the offense in the first inning. Jake Hull drove in two when he singled.
Grinnell Tigers Varsity tallied three runs in the sixth inning. Owen Coffman, Brock Beck, and Blake Hollibaugh powered the big inning with RBIs.
Matthew Bokhoven earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for Pella Christian. He went six innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out five. Blake Veenstra threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Veenstra recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Pella Christian.
Hull took the loss for Grinnell Tigers Varsity. He allowed four hits and two runs over six innings, striking out two.
Colin Gibson went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Grinnell Tigers Varsity in hits.
Pella Christian tallied 11 hits. Will Dembski, Cole Webster, and Veenstra all managed multiple hits for Pella Christian. Dembski led Pella Christian with three hits in four at bats.
